Paper Abstract:      This paper analyzes the diffusion of operations and business support systems (OSS/BSS or OSS) in the telecommunications industry. The analysis is based on positioning this diffusion process on generic models of technology diffusion, network externalities, evolution of the product during the diffusion process and evolution of a vertical software industry. The positioning is based on commercial data sources on over 200 OSS software vendors. Statistical analysis is used for capturing trends among eleven market segments in different evolution phases of the vertical software industry life cycle. The results show that product oriented software vendors operating in mature markets tend to focus on a limited number of network technologies while large IT service houses provide support for a wider variety of legacy network technologies.
